MIAMI — Boating Writers International presented awards to boating and fishing journalists in 17 categories on Friday at the Miami International Boat Show.
Soundings magazine writers won five awards and other Active Interest Media writers won four more in the annual contest.
Among the winners: Soundings editor Bill Sisson, with second-place awards for his “Under Way” column in Soundings and his “From Here: A Marine Industry Blog” in Trade Only Today; Trade Only editor Reagan Haynes, a second for her story “Insurance Costs Likely to Spiral;” Tom Neale, a third for “Scary Close Calls With the ‘Good Guys’” in Soundings; and Barry Gibson, a second for “A Look Back at King Cod” in Soundings.
Other Active Interest Media winners in the 2013 contest were Ben Ellison, a first for his story “True Test” in Power & Motoryacht and a first for his web page, “Panbo.com — The Marine Electronics Hub,”; and Peter Swanson, a first for “Spring Break” in PassageMaker and a second for “Yellow Brick Road” in Power & Motoryacht.
Other first-place winners were Cruising World’s Wendy Mitman Clarke for “Osprey’s Flight;” Cruising World’s Peter Nichols for “The Best Days of Our Lives;” Cruising World’s Gary Goodlander for “My God, they’re Eating in There;” Cruising World’s Ben Yeager for “Answering a Cold Call;” Boating’s Pete McDonald for “Diesel Diagnosis;” Chesapeake Quarterly’s Michael Finchman for “Taking a Long View;” Boating’s Pete McDonald for “Great White Shark;” Cruising World’s Herb McCormick for “Greatest Show on Surf;” Dockwalk’s Chris Caswell for “Perfect Planning;” Seaworthy’s Beth Leonard for “ESD Explained;” Boating’s Jim Hendricks for “The DaVinci Code;” Yachting’s Patrick Sciacca for “Queen of the North;” Practical Sailor’s Patrick Lanier for “DC Watermakers;” and Cruising World’s Gary Goodlander for ”Payin’ the Piper.”
