Police and the Coast Guard searched for a man thought to be missing last Monday near Oregon's Winchester Bay, but it turns out his sister found him on Route 38.
Johnny Lloyd Wheeler, 65, had been in his 16-foot powerboat on the Umpqua River near Salmon Harbor Marina, according to a report in the Umpqua Post. Wheeler had been fishing upriver Sunday and spent the night in his boat when it ran aground on a sandbar after sundown.
A caller told the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at 8 a.m. Monday that Wheeler was last seen at 10 a.m. Sunday.
According to the sheriff's office, Wheeler then spent Monday fishing but ran out of fuel, drifting to the boat ramp at Scottsburg Park.
Unsure whether Wheeler's boat was headed upriver or out to sea, rescuers searched near Winchester Bay for about eight hours.
Wheeler walked on Route 38 in search of fuel and was spotted by his sister, driving west on the highway to Winchester Bay at about 5:45 p.m.
