A boater reported missing in Long Island Sound last Thursday night was found safe on Plum Island, which houses the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, a research facility where scientists study the health of farm livestock, six hours after he was due to dock at the Baldwin Bridge boat launch.

The 31-year-old was found in a security office on the island. He says he had just bought a 13-foot Boston Whaler and was leaving Southold, N.Y., when his engine failed and the vessel began drifting.
