Mistrial declared in death-faking case

A federal jury failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a man accused of causing the Coast Guard to spend hours searching for him in Chesapeake Bay when, according to prosecutors, he fled to Texas to avoid a probation violation.

Prosecutors allege that Maryland resident Larry Deffenbaugh faked his death in Chesapeake Bay in May 2009, leaving his brother on a boat in a panic. The brother called 911 believing Deffenbaugh had fallen overboard that night.
