Mysterious orange stains cost boat owners

Some 200 boat owners whose boats were etched with orange stains at Portage Marina in Indiana this summer appear to be stuck cleaning up - or paying for - damages totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

After months of investigations, officials have still not determined what caused the stains, which resemble tiny rust spots. Some boat owners speculated that an acidic substance may have wafted from nearby industries U.S. Steel Midwest or Amrox, which refreshens and recycles pickle liquor, but neither company has accepted responsibility.

"We may never find out. Nobody wants to open themselves up to a liability. All we can do is suspect right now," said Allen Ekdahl, harbor master for the City of Portage Marina.
