Bertram 410

The Bertram 410 is a new convertible sportfisherman from the venerable Miami powerboat builder. The boat is built using hand-laid fiberglass construction, with a solid hull bottom and foam-cored, vacuum-bagged sides.

The flybridge is laid out with a centerline helm station and captain’s chair, with a companion chair to starboard and curved lounge seating forward. The cockpit features a tackle and bait station, in-sole fishbox, a live well, transom door with lifting gate, and rod storage. An access hatch opens to the engine room and mechanical systems.

Stepping up and into the saloon, there is an L-shaped settee with table to port, an entertainment center with flat-screen television to starboard, and an elevated, curved dinette forward and to starboard. In the optional layout, the dinette is replaced by a second, lower helm station, and a couple of smaller lounge seats are added to the saloon. The galley is forward and to port, a step down from the saloon, and comes equipped with a two-burner stove, refrigerator and freezer, sink, microwave/convection oven and Corian countertops.

Below, the master stateroom is forward and contains a queen-size island berth, port and starboard cedar-lined hanging lockers, an entertainment center with flat-screen television, and access to a private port-side head compartment with stall shower. A second head compartment is to starboard and can be accessed from the companionway or from the second stateroom, which has side-by-side twin berths and a cedar-lined hanging locker.

Options include a folding stern seat in lieu of a transom fishbox, teak cockpit sole, teak helm and companion seats, trolling valves, central vacuum and Anti-Roll Gyro stabilization system.

Essex 34

The Essex 34 is a hardtop express cruiser with Down East looks from Bruckmann Yachts. Designed by naval architect Mark Ellis, known for his classic power- and sailboat designs, the boat shows a gently sweeping sheer line, trunk cabin and tumblehome aft. The beamy hull (12 feet, 5 inches) includes broad chine flats that result in a planing speed of 14 mph and roll-dampening stability at rest, according to the builder. However, the company says the boat’s entry and forward deadrise are more akin to a deep-vee hull.

The Bruckmann yard uses vacuum-bagged fiberglass hull construction with Core-Cell foam coring and modified epoxy resin throughout. The fiberglass deck also has Core-Cell coring, with nonskid on all working surfaces. The boat has a molded swim platform, and there are teak hand-holds on the fiberglass hardtop. There are additional teak hand-holds on the cabin top, and the windshield frame, cap rail and decking on the bridge deck also are teak.

There’s seating in the cockpit and beneath the hardtop, where there’s also a topside wet bar. Below, sleeping arrangements include a forward cabin with either a V-berth or double island berth, and there’s a U-shaped galley, dinette, and an enclosed head compartment and stall shower. The galley comes equipped with a two-burner stove, refrigerator and stainless steel sink.

Wellcraft 27 Scarab

Wellcraft Boats has launched an offshore center console fishing boat with a high-performance edge. The 27 Scarab Tournament rides a deep-vee hull powered by twin outboards from 400 hp to 600 hp total. The layout includes a center console with head compartment, a helm station leaning post with cooler beneath, forward console seat with cooler beneath, a cushioned fold-away aft bench seat, and standard fiberglass T-top. The T-top comes equipped with eight rod holders, spreader lights, an electronics box and PFD storage.

The lighted console head compartment has a port side entry, an opening screened port light, fiberglass liner with non-skid, a portable marine head and molded-in freshwater sink. A pumpout marine head is available as an option.

The cockpit is equipped with coaming bolsters, LED courtesy lights, and screened scuppers. Fishing equipment includes four fishboxes — two forward and two aft — a lighted 84-quart aft bait well, and a transom rigging station with freshwater sink, raw-water washdown, cutting board and removable bin. An optional bait station also is available, with a 40-gallon bait well, tackle storage and additional storage. Other options include canvas enclosures, power steering, outriggers, an electric windlass and a windshield wiper.

Yamaha 232 Limited

Yamaha might be better known for its outboards and WaveRunners, but the manufacturer also offers a stable of seven jet-driven boats. The 232 Limited is the flagship of the fleet. The 23-foot twin-jetdrive bowrider has a walkthrough windshield and a carpeted, enclosed head compartment in the port side console. There’s wraparound seating in the cockpit and at the bow, convertible lounge seating to port, and a captain’s chair with a flip-up bolster at the helm, which includes a tilt steering wheel and wood-grain console. The dinette table can be used in the cockpit or on the swim platform.

Storage compartments are located underneath the seating, in the consoles, and at the stern. There’s also a ski locker in the cockpit sole and an anchor locker at the bow. Other features include a freshwater washdown built into the swim platform, Bimini top, stereo system, stainless steel cup holders, a built-in 36-quart ice chest, depth finder and independent dual-engine controls.

In addition to the 232, Yamaha introduces two other jetboat models this year: the 212X — the first Yamaha wakeboard boat with an internal ballast system — and the high-performance 212SS.

Scout 145 Hybrid

Fishing-boat builder Scout Boats has embraced alternative propulsion with its new 145 Hybrid, which is powered by a single 20-hp outboard flanked by a pair of electric drives. Based on the Scout 145 Sportfish, the 145 Hybrid was developed in conjunction with Lenco Marine, the manufacturer of the electric motors and drives.

The 36-volt drives can run up to eight hours on a full charge of the boat’s deep-cycle batteries, and they are controlled by a joystick mounted at the helm, which replaces the boat’s steering wheel. The electric drives are designed for slow speeds and aren’t for simultaneous use with the outboard, according to Scout.

The 145 is laid out with a cushioned bench seat aft, a side helm console and a thwart seat. A bilge pump is standard, and options include side rails, upgraded seats and a Bimini top. Scout has a 16-foot version of the hybrid boat under development. The company builds sportfishing boats from 14 feet to 29 feet and will introduce its largest model to date — the 350 Abaco — this year.
