C.W. Hood 50

C.W. Hood Yachts, known for its midsize Down East-style boats like the Wasque 26 and Katama 30, has built a cruising motoryacht. The Hood 50 has a composite grid system similar to that of the Wasque, only it supports an expansive cruiser with a bridge deck and saloon up top, and three staterooms, two heads, galley and dinette area below.

The 50-footer has traditional lines with a flared bow and tumblehome aft, and rides a planing hull with a top end of more than 33 mph. Power comes from a pair of diesels coupled to ZF Marine V-drive transmissions with trolling valves; a bow thruster is standard. Lifelines along the wide side decks provide secure access from the cockpit to the foredeck. The Herreshoff-style paneled interior also is a sight for sailor’s eyes, with satin-finish cherry bulkheads and trim, and a satin-finish teak sole. The fully enclosed pilothouse has a centerline helm station with a companion chair to starboard; access to the below-deck accommodations is to port. Wraparound settees in the saloon also take advantage of the pilothouse’s 360-degree visibility.

Down below, a full-beam master stateroom with private head are placed forward of the engine room, slightly abaft amidships. The stateroom has a centerline island berth; seating, storage and counter space along the starboard side; and hanging lockers and laundry facilities to port. Also to port is the head compartment with stall shower. The master stateroom has a private companionway to the aft deck.

The guest head is forward, with a shower stall in the fo’c’sle. Moving aft from the guest head are port and starboard guest staterooms, with bunked berths and hanging lockers, a U-shaped galley to port and U-shaped dinette to starboard. The galley comes equipped with custom refrigeration/icebox, stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher.

Four Winns 310 Horizon

The 310 is the largest bowrider in Four Winns’ Horizon line, with an overall length of 31 feet, 4 inches and beam of 9 feet, 8 inches. A large platform for an open-bow layout, the 310 offers plenty of open-air seating. Starting at the integrated swim platform, there is a pair of adjustable “Mediterranean sunpads” over the engine compartment, and the center section of the U-shaped cockpit seating can be removed to create a

walkthrough transom. The cockpit includes a refreshment center to starboard and abaft the helm station, equipped with a sink, 12-volt receptacle, and storage space for a removable cooler.

Continuing forward, the bowrider’s dual consoles contain amenities found on larger boats. The starboard console forward of the helm houses a head compartment with a sink, vanity, fiberglass liner, overhead lighting and opening portlight. The portside console is home to a double day berth with storage beneath, with an available flat-screen television and microwave. Other options include dockside power, a navigation package and generator. Walkthrough doors lead to the bow seating area, with removable cushions and a table.

Albin 28TE Newport

The Albin 28 Tournament Express has undergone quite a few changes since the first hull was launched in 1993. This fall the builder of “fishing machines for the cruising family” introduced a variation called the 28TE Newport Edition.

The Newport Edition is based on the Flush Deck version of the 28TE, which has a one-level cockpit and helm area. However, on the Newport there is L-shaped seating to port in the helm area, beneath the hardtop, and optional drop-down canvas or a hard enclosure meets with the aft end of the settee. An

optional pull-out berth means the 28TE can sleep up to four, and a removable companion seat and folding cockpit seating also are available.

Below deck, the dinette — convertible to a double berth — is placed forward, surrounded by a shelf. Abaft the dinette and to port is the galley, equipped with a butane stove, microwave, refrigerator and sink. Across from the galley are a hanging locker and head with pull-out shower and sink. A quarter berth is to port, abaft the galley. The Newport Edition includes more wood appointments, as well as a valence for instrumentation above the helm.

Like the other Montauk models, it is a center console with 360-degree fishability and classic styling reminiscent of the original Boston Whaler Nauset.

The 190, which has 1 foot, 7 inches of interior freeboard, comes with welded stainless steel bow and side rails standard; port and starboard boarding steps are molded in. The bow locker has a fiberglass cover and overboard drain, as does the aft cockpit storage area. A pair of rod holders is standard.

The new Montauk has a reversible pilot seat with locking backrest and storage beneath. A stainless steel steering wheel is standard, as is Teleflex no-feedback steering. Fishing options such as a live well, console-mounted rod holders, and tackle drawers are available, and other options include a swim platform, bow cushion, 72-quart cooler with cushion and backrest, stereo system, canvas top, aft seating and a Navman electronics package.
