Long Island Sound racers will have one more place to test their skills this year.
The inaugural Rock2Rock Regatta is scheduled for Sept. 10, hosted by Stonington Harbor Yacht Club partnered with Michael Hennessy. The race will begin at Race Rock, on the far eastern end of Long Island Sound, run down the Sound to Execution Rock at the far western end, then return to the point of origin. The course is 159 nautical miles long.
The new event should fill a need at the eastern end of the Sound for middle distance, overnight races for various boat designs, says one of the organizers. “Western Long Island Sound has great races like the Block Island and Vineyard races, and now Newport has the Ida Lewis Race. We felt that a similar event at the eastern end of the Sound could attract a large number of competitors for some exciting sailing,” said Hennessy in a statement.
Divisions will include IMS Racer, IMS Racer/Cruiser, PHRF Spinnaker, PHRF Non-Spinnaker, and NEMA rated Multi Hulls. A Big Boat division, measured under a modified IMS rule, will also be available, as will a PHRF rated Double Handed division.
