Fire sinks fishing boat

The Coast Guard and the Jamestown Fire Department responded July 18 to a burning fishing boat four miles south of Newport, R.I.

Chris Lutyens — the only person aboard the vessel, Lucy, when the fire started — was taken aboard a 25-foot response boat from Station Castle Hill, transported to the Jamestown pier and transferred by awaiting Jamestown EMS to Newport Hospital for follow-up treatment.

The Jamestown Fire Department arrived around 7:30 a.m. and fought the fire until the vessel sank in about 100 feet of water.

Lutyens had reportedly escaped in a life raft and called Coast Guard Station Castle Hill by cell phone, reporting his Jamestown-based boat was on fire south off Lands End, R.I., around 6:20 a.m.

The crew of another fishing vessel, Odyssey, observed the fire and took Lutyens aboard.

No-discharge zone urged for BostonHarbor

During an Aug. 6 press conference, EPA and city officials said it is time to ban commercial and recreational sewage discharge in BostonHarbor.

The proposed no-discharge area would extend three miles from Boston, Winthrop, Revere, Quincy, Hingham, Weymouth and Hull. Such a ban would require boaters to use pumpout stations or discharge waste farther out to sea. Violators would be fined up to $2,000.

The clean-up drive picked up momentum after hurdles such as $4 billion in renovations to the waste-water treatment plants and sewage systems had been initiated.

Several coastal areas in Massachusetts are designated no-discharge zone. Neighboring Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire have banned dumping along their coastlines.

State officials say they hope to have BostonHarbor no-discharge zone approved by the federal EPA by the 2008 boating season and the entire coastline in Massachusetts designated no-discharge in 2009.

Summer Gala includes classic yacht regatta

The InternationalYachtRestorationSchool hosted its 10th annual Summer Gala fundraiser the evening of July 14. The event, which included a dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions, raised a record-breaking total of $650,000 for the school’s educational programs.

“[Master of Ceremonies] Gary Jobson was a master at getting dinner guests involved in the auction. People dug deep into their pockets to find the funds that will help IYRS continue its good work,” said Joseph Dockery (Newport, R.I./Greenwich, Conn.), an IYRS Trustee and co-chairman of the event.

The auction included items such as an IYRS-restoredManhassetBay One Design sailboat, and an invitation to join Ted Turner, Jobson, and the Courageous crew at a dinner at the America’s Cup Hall of Fame (Bristol, R.I.) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the crew’s Cup win. This turned out to be the largest-ticket item of the auction, going for $58,000.

To mark the event’s 10th anniversary, organizers a regatta of classic sailing yachts that included match-racing between W-76s White Wings and Wild Horses, evening parties at estates and waterfront homes of IYRS supporters, and a farewell brunch and cruise on Sunday aboard a fleet of private yachts. People came from as far as Europe, Hong Kong, and the West Coast and Gulf coast to support the event.

The 2008 IYRS Summer Gala will take place July 12.

Sailing star to give seminar

On the opening day of the Newport International Boat Show in Rhode Island on Sept. 13, Gary Jobson will be giving a seminar, Sailing Updates, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. with information about the America’s Cup, current events and the outlook for next year’s Olympics.

Jobson’s talk is part of the show’s Seminar Series, which is open, free of charge, to all boat show attendees.

Jobson, 56, is a sailor, television commentator and author based in Annapolis, Md.

On the water he’s won numerous championships in one-design classes, the America’s Cup with Ted Turner in 1977, the Fastnet Race and many of the world’s ocean races. In college he was an All American sailor three times and was twice named College Sailor of the Year (1972, 1973).

In October 2003 Gary was inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame by the HerreshoffMarineMuseum. In 1999 Jobson won the Nathaniel G. Herreshoff Trophy, US Sailing’s most prestigious award.

He currently races his Etchells and owns a Sabre 402.

Beneteaus rendezvous off Mystic, Conn.

Sailing Specialties, a dealer for Beneteau Hunter, Mainship, Shamrock and Precision boat in Mystic, Conn., hosted a Beneteau Rendezvous Aug. 3 to 5.

Sailors from near and far on over 20 Beneteaus of various sizes sailed to Mystic to take part in the event. Participants sharpened their technical skills at seminars about diesel maintenance and electronics issues.

Speakers Douglas andBernadette Bernon offered an account of their six-year journey sailing to Guatemala, Belize, the Bahamas and other places.

A treasure hunt was held aboard a new Beneteau 49, where prizes donated by local Mystic merchants were found by putting together a string of clues. The festivities culminated in a festive dinner under the tent, and dancing to a live Jimmy Buffet-style band.

Marblehead sailor’s ocean racer is launched

Another major milestone for sailor and educator Rich Wilson’s Great American III was reached in August with the completion of a 10-month refit project on the Open 60.

GAIII was launched at MaineYachtCenter in Portland, Maine, putting Wilson a step closer in his quest to be the only American to race the 2008 Vendee Globe.

On Aug. 2 the keel was fitted and mast stepped. The refit project at Maine Yacht Center included substantial stem repairs; removal and modification of the canting keel; rehab of the engine; total replacement of the electrical system as well as a new deck layout with a new pedestal.

The next step for the GAIII: certification by IMOCA for the Vendee Globe race. In late August, the boat was to be hoisted out of PortlandHarbor for its mandatory measurements and tests for certification.

Then in November, Wilson, along with co-skipper Mike Birch, plans to race GAIII in the Transat Jacques Vabre.

Rich Wilson, of Marblehead, Mass., has three world-record setting voyages to his credit including a voyage from San Francisco to Boston by way of Cape Horn in 1994. He also founded the Sites Alive Foundation, a non-profit platform for his ongoing educational program Ocean Challenge, a series of educational programs for students worldwide.

In 2005 Wilson’s ocean voyages and contributions to education earned him one of sailing’s highest honors, the Cruising Club of America’s prestigious Blue Water Medal.

‘Deadliest Catch’ captains attend festival

Working Waterfront Festival organizers in New Bedford, Mass., announced in August that two of Alaska’s most famous crab fishermen, Capt. Phil Harris of Cornelia Marie and Capt. Johnathan Hillstrand of Time Bandit will appear at the 2007 Working Waterfront Festival set for Sept. 22 and 23.

The Discovery Channel's Emmy-nominated series “Deadliest Catch,” one of cable TV’s top-rated shows, features their family-run fishing boats.

Harris, with 30 years crab-fishing experience, just spent his 16th year with Cornelia Marie, a top-performer last season.

The two captains will be at the festival both days and will appear on the main stage at 5 p.m. Sept. 22, for an informal question-and-answer session followed by autographs and T-shirt signing.

The Working Waterfront Festival is a free festival, a family-friendly, educational celebration of New England's commercial fishing industry.

New England tug dealer to debut new technology

Wilde Yacht Sales in Essex, Conn., will host the exclusive premiere of Nordic Tugs’ new articulating rudder option with a Sept. 8 open house.

The boatbuilder will incorporate this new feature on its 2008 37-, 42- and 52-foot models.

Nordic Tugs says its articulating rudder provides numerous benefits, including increased maneuverability, a significantly tightened turning radius and increased steerage while backing down. Additionally, the articulating rudder is designed for improved docking ability, which often eliminates the need for stern thrusters on larger boats.

The West Coast tug builder recently introduced a Gold Standard Warranty that offers one-year stem-to-stern coverage and warrants the hull for 10 years against both structural failure and osmotic blistering starting with 2008 models delivered after July 1, 2007.

Traveling trawler event gets new Web site

PassageMaker magazine recently launched a new Web site for their event series, Trawler Fest. The new site possesses the same functions and tools as the recently redesigned www.passage

Trawler Fest, a regional boat show designed for cruising enthusiasts, features boats and gear, opportunities to mingle with industry professionals and other cruisers, and seminars that answer cruising questions. Beyond being a boat show, the event is touted as a sales, networking and social experience. Now, with the launch of the new site, users can find information about each regional event before and after its occurrence and online registration is easier. Prior to each of the four Trawler Fest events, a full schedule, including seminars, afternoon activities, and cocktail and dinner receptions, along with a full listing of exhibitors and their Web site links, is available online. Video clips from previous shows can be easily downloaded, giving attendees and exhibitors a glimpse of the action. The regularly updated site also offers a full listing of items for the shows’ live auctions, donated by specified show exhibitors and sponsors.

PassageMaker is owned by Dominion Enterprises, which also owns Soundings.

Classic designs launch Down East Race Week

The famed Olin Stephens yawl Dorade — recently returned to the U.S. by a new owner — the recently launched Stormy Weather-tribute Anna, a host of NY32s and a gaggle of other Sparkman & Stephens designs claimed silver in a number of classes at Down East Race Week, held Aug. 5 to 10.

The midsummer event includes the Castine Classic Yacht Race to Camden, the Brooklin Feeder Race and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta.

Anna, inspired by the 1930s S&S classic Stormy Weather, scored fourth in class in the Castine race; Dorade a third in class; Safari (a Loki-class yawl) a second in class; Siren (an NY32) a second in class; and Fidelio (sistership to Finnesterre) a third in class.

In the Brooklin Feeder Race, Dorade won the Classic class and Anna topped the Sprit of Tradition class. Falcon, an NY32, placed second among the Classics.

Anna saved her best for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. She won the Sprit of Tradition class, the fastest S&S yacht on corrected and uncorrected time and the shortest elapsed time.

“PenobscotBay is one of the prettiest sailing grounds in the world,” said S&S executive vice president and chief designer Bruce Johnson. “It was amazing to see such a collection of wooden boats this large and varied racing together and it was wonderful to see S&S boats 70 years apart in vintage racing side by side, all equally competitive in their respective classes.”

Sailing scribes join Reed’s Nautical Almanacs

Publisher Jerald Knopf of Thomas Reed Publications recently recruited marine writers and editors Herb McCormick and Greg Jones to take the editorial helm of Reed’s Nautical Almanacs.

McCormick, the former editor of Cruising World magazine, will become the new editor-in-chief of Reed’s, while Jones, who served as editor of Sailing magazine and senior editor of Blue Water Sailor, has been named executive editor at Reed’s. Together, McCormick and Jones will lead a team of freelance contributors in the field while aiming to take Reed’s to new levels as a passage-planning resource and hands-on navigational tool.

Reed’s, known as “the authoritative navigational resource for voyage planning and reference under way,” is published annually in three editions: East Coast, West Coast and Caribbean. The books list crucial navigational information including tide and current tables; lights, beacons and buoy characteristics; GPS waypoints; harbor and approach chartlets; schedules and station guides for weather and radio communications; and much more.

Cruise ship heads Down East

American Cruise Lines embarked on its 2007 Maine Coast & Harbors season with a ceremony officially naming the newest vessel to the fleet, the American Star.

The American Star is spending its inaugural summer cruising along Maine’s coast and harbors, taking passengers on seven-night cruises from Bangor to Bucksport, Bar Harbor, Rockland, Castine, Camden and Belfast.

The American Star will cruise along the Maine coast and harbors from June 16 thru Sept. 29. The 49-passenger American Glory will also join the American Star in August for three departures.

The 100-passenger American Star is 215 feet long, and will have a similar modern design to the American Spirit. The ship features 52 oversized staterooms many with private verandahs, and all staterooms have the large opening picture windows, a trademark of American Cruise Lines. Every room is fitted with a flat-screen satellite TV and DVD player, individual climate control and Internet access.

The ship’s layout include an elevator to all four decks, wireless Internet computer for passengers, four lounges of various sizes, a spacious observation deck and a well-stocked library.

Yacht manufacturer launches new Web site

Island Packet Yachts, known for their line of bluewater cruising sailboats, has launched their new Web site at

The new site is a complete redesign and incorporates brand new features, including a video with Island Packet sailing footage and owner testimonials.

“Just seven years ago an IP owner convinced us to create our first Island Packet Web site,” says Island Packet’s marketing manager Karsten Johnson. “In that short time it has become the number one way people get information on our yachts (old and new), our company, our owners and our dealers.”

The updated site contains an extensive amount of information and is now more consistent with the boatbuilder’s brochures and magazine ads.

Founded by Bob Johnson in 1979, Largo, Fla.-based Island Packet Yachts is the builder of cruising yachts from 37 to 52 feet, including the new SP Cruiser motorsailer and PY Cruiser trawler.
