Five people died and nine were hospitalized after a boating accident on the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Johns County, Fla., according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

According to FWC investigators, a 22-foot 2000 Crownline rammed into the rear, starboard side of a 25-foot tug boat that was tied to a dock. The tug is registered to F&A Enterprises in St. Augustine.

The accident occurred around 7:15 p.m., April 12, about a mile north of the Palm Valley Bridge (State Road 210) in Palm Valley — roughly 20 miles north of St. Augustine, Fla. The injured were taken to Jacksonville-area hospitals; three of the injured were airlifted from the scene. Those who died were from Florida and California.

In an unusual move, the National Transportation Safety Board has decided to investigate the incident.
