Offshore Sailing School celebrates 40th year

Offshore Sailing School’s 40th year of instruction begins April 25 as the school re-opens its northern bases.

The school’s Newport, R.I., center provides US Sailing certification courses, new sailors clinics, advanced clinics, corporate challenges and a popular sail club for area residents.

The expanded 2004 schedule starts May 20 with a four-day racing symposium coached by guest experts aboard the school’s award-winning fleet of Colgate 26 sailboats. Weekend liveaboard clinics on a 38 foot Hunter yacht begins May 29. Also new in 2004 is the Twilight Series, which begins May 19 with special clinics from 6 p.m. to sundown. Clinics focusing on special skills include docking and anchoring, spinnaker handling, night navigation and round-the-buoy racing techniques.

Students taking the Live Aboard Cruising course — one of Newport’s most popular courses, which sold out last year — will set sail for Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Cutty Hunk, Sag Harbor, Point Judith and Watch Hill beginning May 26.; e-mail:
