Old shrimp boat to become caravel
The 30-year-old, 73-foot retired wooden shrimp boat Apple Jack looks pretty rough right now — its flaking paint and dreams of bright Caribbean seas the only things left — but a group of enthusiastic St. Augustine, Fla., residents plan to turn that ugly duckling into a swan.
Their idea: Refit the deteriorating Apple Jack as an actual-sized caravel and get it afloat by 2013, the discovery of Florida by Ponce De Leon, and 2015, the 450th anniversary of St. Augustine’s founding.
