One dead after capsize off Fort Lauderdale

One of the five people rescued after a boat capsized off Fort Lauderdale died Thursday.

Jorge Pino, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, confirmed the man's death on Thursday morning.

The incident that turned deadly unfolded about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when one of the men clinging to the capsized boat called 911 and directed rescuers to the 18-foot vessel, which had overturned about a mile off Fort Lauderdale Beach, said Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Heiser, with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

"I don't know what caused the boat to capsize, but I was advised by the fire crew that the water is rough out there this evening," Heiser told the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.
