Organized ring suspected in wave of outboard-motor thefts

Law enforcement officials believe an organized ring of professional outboard-motor thieves likely is behind a wave of Lower Florida Keys thefts in recent months.

At least 48 outboards or outboard lower units have been reported stolen from Big Pine Key to Stock Island since the beginning of the year, according to Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin.

Five of those thefts took place in the past 11 days.
