Pinballing off boats

JUNE 19 A Hawaiian man operating a 76-foot Prowler powerboat allegedly damaged up to 10 boats and two piers at a yacht club Tuesday night after apparently trying to evade police following a drunken driving accident.

The man, who is 65 years old and of Honolulu, was arrested when a police officer and an engineer from another boat jumped aboard the Prowler and were able to subdue him, Honolulu’s Star Bulletin newspaper reported. Charges against the man included operating a vehicle while under the influence, criminal property damage and fleeing from the scene of an accident.

“At first I thought we were having an earthquake,” boat owner Bill Browning says in the report. Browning was sleeping aboard his 70-foot catamaran, Double Barrel, at the Waikiki Yacht Club when the Prowler struck his boat. The man allegedly collided with a number of boats as he was attempting to exit the harbor.

“By the sixth time he hit me, I thought my boat was going to snap in half,” Browning says in the report.

The man crashed into the boats and piers while allegedly fleeing police after he smashed his convertible into a sport utility vehicle parked in the marina parking lot, the report says. The SUV is said to belong to a friend of the man’s girlfriend.
