Pirates, movie stars and solar boats

Everyman movie star Tom Hanks will play the starring role in a movie about the dramatic rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate held captive for five days by Somali pirates in 2009, according to the MMA's website.

The movie is based on Phillips memoir, “A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs and Dangerous Days at Sea,” is to be directed by Paul Greengrass, who also directed the second and third chapters of the “Bourne” spy-thriller movies and the 9/11 drama “United 93.”

In a related story, PlanetSolar, the world’s largest solar-powered boat in the midst of the first circumnavigation by a solar-powered boat is set to cross the Gulf of Aden, straight through the heart of pirate-infested waters.

Since the 99-foot vessel’s top speed is about 8 knots, the captain and crew obviously have their concerns and have hired a security officer as crew for this passage.
