Plastic boat continues trans-Pacific voyage

As the experimental catamaran named Plastiki, made entirely of recycled plastic bottles, slowly makes its way across the Pacific, the Internet-connected crew keeps in touch with the shore-side world.

"It's a testament to the vessel's build quality," says adventurer David de Rothschild, who conceived of a 10,000-mile sail from California to Australia in a catamaran made from recycled plastic to spotlight the material's overuse and its reuse.

So far, the boat has absorbed nature's fury. Bodies are another matter.

"The biggest impact is the constant movement, whether brushing teeth or going to bed," says de Rothschild, who previously sledded across Antarctica. "But the body adjusts."
