Plastic-bottle catamaran makes Sydney

Plastiki, a 60-foot sailing cat constructed from 12,500 recycled plastic bottles, docked Monday in Australia's Sydney Harbor after four difficult months crossing the Pacific to raise awareness about the perils of plastic waste.

The crew weathered fierce ocean storms during their 8,000 nautical miles at sea, according to a report in the Washington Post. The cat left March 20 from San Francisco, stopping along the way at various South Pacific island nations.

"It has been an extraordinary adventure," said expedition leader David de Rothschild, a descendant of the well-known British banking family.
