Presidential fishing trip less than smooth

JULY 3 — With such weighty topics as missile defense and Iran sanctions on tap for a meeting this week with Russian president Vladimir Putin, President George W. Bush last weekend spent a relaxing afternoon fishing with his father, former president George H.W. Bush, and daughter Barbara.

The trio set off from the family’s Kennebunkport, Maine, estate aboard the senior Bush’s Fountain fishing boat, Fidelity III, an Associated Press news report says. But the anchor reportedly became fouled off Biddeford and couldn’t be raised.

Nothing new there. Unlike most boaters, however, the president was able to call members of the Secret Service to help, the report says. As local residents and vacationers watched from shore, Secret Service divers plunged into the chilly waters and freed the anchor.

Back at the estate, awaiting Putin’s arrival, President Bush reportedly was asked how his fishing trip went. “Lousy,” he responded.
