‘Priceless’ gold coins discovered off the coast of Israel

Following the speck of light on the seafloor, a diver swam right to the spot at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea and began digging with his bare hands.

“Other members of my diving group joined me and we discovered a significant amount of coins,” the diver told Israeli media.

The coins, minted from gold, date back nearly 1,000 years, to the Islamic Fatimid Dynasty, which ruled an empire in North Africa and the Middle East until 1171.

The find — nearly 2,000 coins in all — is “so valuable that it’s priceless,” Israeli Antiquities Authority spokeswoman Yoli Schwartz said.
