PWC rider killed by nearby lightning strike

The Maryland Natural Resources Police says the preliminary cause of death July 25 of a PWC rider was electrocution. The incident occurred a half-mile south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge during last Sunday's severe thunderstorm.

The investigation indicated that Warren Douglas Smith, 63, of Annapolis, Md., was caught in the storm as he raced back to port. Investigators believe Smith was not struck directly by lightning, but was electrocuted by a nearby strike.
