Racing yacht establishes a New York-to-Barcelona record

There had never been a sailing speed record recorded before, but 12 days, 6 hours, 3 minutes and 48 seconds, is the mark for the sailing record books.

Estrella Damm, the Imoca Open 60, and the crew of Alex Pella, Pepe Ribes and Stan Schreyer set the first record for the 3,670 (orthodromic) miles passage under sail from New York to Barcelona early Wednesday morning when they crossed the finish line in front of the Catalan capital's 26-story iconic glass W Hotel. The monohull sailed an average speed of 12.48 knots
