The Mystic Seaport board of trustees has approved an $8 million restoration that would return its centerpiece exhibit, the 1841 whale ship Charles W. Morgan, to a seaworthy condition and enable the seaport to launch the ship on a ceremonial cruise, probably in 2013.

The ship, the nation's oldest commercial vessel, is a registered National Historic Landmark.

Restoration of the ship began about a year ago, when the seaport hauled her from her berth on the Mystic River. The seaport now is expected to turn its attention to fund-raising.
