Sail record attempt ends in heartbreak

A tantalizing start to ICAP Leopard's attempt on the Round Britain and Ireland record came to an abrupt end less than three hours later when damage to the boom forced them to retire.

Sam Davies, co-navigator on Mike Slade's maxi, who was hoping to set a new record mark at the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race as part of the ICAP Leopard crew, is now back in Southampton where the damage to a goose-neck fitting is being assessed and repairs planned.

"We were all incredibly disappointed. There was a feeling among the guys who work full time on the boat that they had been let down because we all felt really fired up to get the record," said Davies.
