Sailboat owned by Google chairman’s wife sinks


A 46-foot classic wooden sailboat owned by Wendy Schmidt, wife of Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt, caught fire and sank off Rhode Island on Friday while returning to Nantucket, Mass., according to the Coast Guard.

Equus was the winner of the 2011 Opera House Cup classic wooden sailboat race off Nantucket and had been in a Rhode Island shipyard for work.

She was not aboard, but two crewmembers were. They were able to escape to another vessel without injury, Petty Officer Ross Ruddell of the 1st Coast Guard District in Boston told
