Sailing couple winched to safety

A middle-aged Australian couple had spent the last four weeks sailing offshore when their vessel began taking on water and they spent a night trying to bail water to keep the vessel afloat. They finally set off an emergency beacon and rescuers arrived and attempted to hoist the couple in swells up to 20 feet.

''I tried to winch down, but the seas were too rough and the swell was anywhere from three to six meters,'' intensive care flight paramedic Peter Davidson said. ''One moment I was on the end of the winch with my feet in the water, the next I was as high as the crane on the boat.
