Sailing family rescued far offshore

A San Diego family with a sick infant girl two weeks into a trans-Pacific sailing trip boarded a U.S. Navy ship Sunday morning, three days after California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing boarded the family's boat to give medical care to the infant, officials said.

After their 36-foot sailboat lost steering and communication abilities about 900 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, they sent a satellite call for help to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The couple is now facing criticism for taking their daughters — just 1 and 3 years old — on a bluewater voyage.
