Sailing syndicate head urged to defend Cup in U.S.

Now that San Francisco is the only U.S. city in the running to host the America's Cup, Mayor Gavin Newsom is rallying corporate, civic and political leaders to land a sporting event that could inject billions into the local economy.

The mayor hopes to generate support nationwide to compete against four European countries - Spain, Italy and two undisclosed nations - also vying to host the 159-year-old regatta.
