Sailor caught offshore in heavy weather

NOV. 28 -- Coast Guard officials rescued a Honolulu man Wednesday nearly 300 miles off Cape Canaveral, Fla.

James Hunt, 57, experienced 12- to 15-foot seas and gale-force winds, aboard his 28-foot sailboat, Camelot, when his engine failed and his sails were destroyed, a Coast Guard report says. Hunt placed a distress call over his VHF.

The crew of a merchant vessel, Asphalt Victory, heard Hunt’s call for help and relayed it to Coast Guard officials in Miami, the report says. A C-130 search-and-rescue airplane and a Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., and second Jayhawk from a station in the Bahamas, were launched to search the area.

At about 11 a.m. the Bahamas-based helicopter crew located Hunt and hoisted him to safety, according to the report. Hunt was taken to the Bahamas where he reportedly planned to take a commercial flight to Hawaii.
