Sailors go from luff to ‘in the buff’

Sailing gold medalist Iain Percy and several of his British teammates grin and “bare” it in a new calendar to benefit the British Olympic and Paralympic squads.

The sailors pose nude — private parts strategically covered — in the 2005 calendar “for Gold,” produced in conjunction with the Royal Yacht Association and Sail for Gold, which supports British Olympic and Paralympic sailors.

The calendar was shot by Kos, a female British marine photographer, in locations from Barcelona City, Spain, to the south coast of England. (She also runs the Kos Picture Source stock photography company, The black and white images are bold, striking and somewhat risqué. Organizers say the photos depict the training and athleticism required to compete with the best sailors in the world.

In addition to Percy, the calendar features Olympic hopefuls Nick Rogers and crewmember Joe Glanfield, Katherine Hopson, Nick Dempsey, and Laura Baldwin, as well as past gold medalists Ben Ainslie, Shirley Robertson and Percy’s crewmember Steve Mitchell. Percy, who won gold in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and Mitchell compete in the Star Class.

Hopson and teammate Christina Bassadone sail the 470, a class Great Britain didn’t even qualify in for the 2000 games. The pair placed fifth at the world championships last year. Baldwin is competing in the Europe Class.

Printing of the calendars was sponsored by Pindar, and the photo shoot production costs were sponsored by United House Ltd.

The “for Gold” calendar sells for about $30 (U.S.) and will be delivered beginning in September. It can be ordered online at
