Sailors rescued as boat drifts onto reef

A couple sailing their yacht from San Diego to Australia were rescued from a life raft July 3 off the coast of Gladstone in Queensland, Australia, after their vessel encountered some mechanical problems.

Matt Brandon, helicopter aircrew man with the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue said the 45-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman ran aground on Llewellyn Reef, about 90 miles offshore when their mainsail broke.

"They tried to avoid the reef, but the currents and wind pushed them onto it," he said.

"They tried a few things to get off the reef, but they said they had dramas with their mast breaking. The 13-meter yacht started taking on water and breaking up, so they abandoned ship and got into a life raft."
