San Fran Cup event would mean waterfront redevelopment

When Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle Racing won the 33rd America's Cup, the syndicate also won the right to say where the next Cup regatta will occur.

To woo the billionaire, who has a home in San Francisco and whose syndicate sails for the Golden Gate Yacht Club, city leaders proposed a string of Cup-related facilities.

The idea is to pair the reuse of existing structures with the construction of new facilities that would combine functionality with a forward-looking sheen, according to an report.

The big design move would be at Piers 30-32, where the equivalent of the event's town square would spread beneath a fabric canopy that slopes down toward the water and then ascends over the bay, pulled taut by an angled mast fashioned from recycled wood.
