As the wind blew and the choppy waves came at them from every direction, Billy Campbell and his three-member crew leaned over the edge of his schooner and grabbed at the three men clinging to an overturned sailboat.
“If we had not seen them, they likely would not have made it,” the actor said Wednesday in an interview from Bannister’s Wharf in Newport, R.I.
Campbell, best known for his starring role in the 1991 film, “The Rocketeer,” was sailing his Lunenburg-built schooner on its maiden voyage from the town to Newport for the annual boat show when the rescue off the Massachusetts coast happened.
“They were pretty hypothermic,” Campbell said. “Probably an hour or so and they would have started to drown.”
