Sea cadet dies after fall from training ship

A 14-year-old sea cadet died after falling from the rigging of a training ship during a celebration weekend to mark the British organization's 150th anniversary.

The youth had been furling the sails on the TS Royalist as the sailing brig was at anchor. The crew of the Royalist managed to reach him within minutes. Paramedics continued resuscitation attempts as he was transferred to a lifeboat and then winched aboard a Coastguard helicopter, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Sea Cadets have 14,000 members at 400 units around the U.K.
