Search suspended for sailor swept overboard

The Coast Guard on Tuesday suspended the search for a missing skipper who fell overboard from a sailboat Sunday in the North Pacific.

Luke Stimson, 38, set off from Osaka, Japan, bound for home in Southampton, England, a few weeks ago with one crew, his fiancee Laura Vernon on the 16,000 mile voyage.

The couple was about 2,000 miles off the coast of Hawaii in their 38-foot boat, named Jonetsu, when he reported fell into heavy seas. Stimson was reportedly wearing a yellow lifejacket and was conscious when he fell into the water.

Vernon, who reportedly had minimal sailing experience, was hoisted from the ship by a rescue helicopter in the early hours Monday after calling for help by satellite phone.
