What boats does Shelter Island runabout designer Doug Zurn dream of having in his slip? He shares his top three picks, and much more about blending traditional with modern design.
Doug Zurn has been designing yachts since 1993 and has worked with some of the world’s most renowned boatbuilders. He is president of Zurn Yacht Design in Marblehead, Mass., and has launched more than 275 power- and sailboats from 20 to 90 feet. His portfolio includes both custom and production boats for such clients as mJm Yachts, Marlow, Lyman-Morse and Bruckmann.
Zurn, 45, has also designed boats for singer/songwriter Billy Joel, such as the Shelter Island 38 and the 57-foot commuter yacht Vendetta. A graduate of the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, Zurn enjoys sailing his 9-foot Dyer dinghy and cruises his home waters in a 20-foot center console of his design.
