Solar-powered boat race draws teamwork

Among the growing number of solar boat races organized all over the world is the 137-mile Frisian Solar Challenge race, which was held for the third time July 4-11 in the Netherlands.

The race starts in Leeuwarden and follows canals, rivers and lakes, with an occasional pit stop. The race features 40 teams from countries, including Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.

The race is divided into three classes: the A class is for one-person boats, the B class is for two-person boats, and the open or C class can have a crew of any size.
