Solo circumnavigation record hindered by weather

French solo sailor Thomas Coville is attempting to break Francis Joyon's IDEC solo Round-the-World Record - the Jules Verne Trophy record - aboard trimaran Sodebo.

However, having set off to tackle the record some 52 days ago and been dogged by contrary weather, the skipper of Sodebo is having to face yet another meteorological barrier on his journey back to Europe. Because of the 'anticyclonic swamp' sprawling across the North Atlantic, Thomas Coville is being forced to make a massive detour via the West.

He still has a chance of breaking the record, but it is getting more remote every day.
