Soundings Publications LLC of Essex, Conn., has appointed Peter K. Mitchel general manager.

Mitchel’s responsibilities will include oversight of the editorial, advertising, production and circulation departments, including budgets, for the company’s three magazines — Soundings, Soundings Trade Only and Woodshop News. Mitchel also will help facilitate efforts by Soundings’ parent company, Trader Publishing Co. of Norfolk, Va., to expand its portfolio of consumer and business-to-business magazines.

“Peter Mitchel brings to Soundings a great combination of experience, talent and financial skills,” says James Causey, Trader Publishing vice president of consumer and industry magazines. “His abilities will help us manage and grow our existing high-quality magazines, and take on new ventures for future growth.”

Mitchel says he’s been familiar with Soundings magazine since childhood — his father is a longtime subscriber — and sailed Long Island Sound aboard his family’s Hinckley Pilot.

“I’m thrilled,” Mitchel says of the appointment. “I’ve been seeking a role like this for a long time. It allows me to bring my vision of leadership and my knowledge of publishing to magazines of such high caliber.”

A publishing executive with more than 16 years of experience, Mitchel began his career at Time Inc., where he spent 12 years and last served as finance manager of the Time Magazine Production division. He went on to become chief financial officer of Cadmus Publishing, a publisher of various consumer and special-interest publications. Mitchel comes to Soundings from IN New York, the Big Apple’s high-end visitor magazine, where he was general manager.

Mitchel earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., and a master’s of business administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. He lives with his wife and two children in Newtown, Conn., and works in Soundings Publications’ Essex headquarters.
