Passengers on a luxury liner that was stranded by a power failure off the coast of California have spoken of their "cruise from hell" as the boat neared shore.

Some of the 3,299 guests aboard the Carnival Splendor told how it was dark, cold and stank of rotten food and lavatories after three days adrift at sea.

There was no electricity, air conditioning, hot water or hot food. Lines for cold food stretched for hours and passengers were sleeping on the decks shrouded in blankets.

As six tug boats pulled the stricken 952-foot vessel into San Diego Bay they were able to tell relatives of their ordeal by mobile phone.
