The 50-foot powerboat Priceless, out for a trip from the Westerly (R.I.) Yacht Club, sank within three minutes Sunday after hitting rocks off Fisher’s Island, N.Y., according to witnesses to the accident in which the wife of the skipper died.
Mary Patenaude, 67, drowned when she went back into the cabin “to get something,” authorities were told by those who were rescued. The powerboat sank in 40-plus feet of water. Patenaude was one of 10 passengers, along with a dog, on the boat.
Passengers on the boat said that after it struck the rock it began to roll and shake at a rapid rate and “totally sank in three minutes,” Old Mystic Fire Department Chief Ken Richards Jr., told The Westerly Sun.
