Taking on water, skipper runs yacht aground

Multiple Coast Guard crews assisted a Miami-based yacht last Friday after it hit a rock 100 yards off Nobska Beach near Woods Hole, Mass.

The master of the 85-foot yacht, Cocktails, intentionally grounded the vessel on the beach to prevent it from taking on more water through the 4-by-20 hole in the boat’s bow.

“The yacht was intentionally grounded to keep the waterways open and to save the vessel from sinking,” said senior chief petty officer Ronny German from Sector Southeastern New England. “A safety zone was created to keep other boaters out of the area so crews could assist the yacht.”

There are no reports of any injuries or pollution.
