Four young Massachusetts sailors on Sunday launched a boat they built using ingenuity and math they learned through a Cape Cod Maritime Museum program during the last couple of months.
The four middle school boys built the 12-foot-long plywood skiff as part of the museum's first Building to Teach class, said Bob Lister, a volunteer who led the class.
Building the boat required the boys to use basic geometry and other math skills to figure out details like measurements, Lister said.
"They learned skills that they needed as they went," he said. "The whole idea of it is they have to know math and figure out math problems to build."
