Teen sailor begins solo Atlantic crossing

Dutch/New Zealander Laura Dekker was scheduled to depart the Cape Verde Islands Thursday to begin her attempted crossing of the Atlantic as part of a solo westward circumnavigation.

The 15-year-old anchored off the island for a couple of weeks to await the end of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Her boat, named Guppy, is a Gin Fizz Jeanneau, a 38-foot ketch designed more for cruising than racing. She plans on stopping at many ports and take about two years for the voyage.
