Teenage solo sailors try to top one another

Laura Dekker, 13, is looking to gain residency and a New Zealand passport so the Dutch teenager can sail around the world alone.

Child protection authorities in her Netherlands homeland are taking the case to court in a bid to stop the teenager from making the trip, but the Dekker, who was born on a yacht off the coast of New Zealand during a seven-year world trip her parents were making, is ready for a fight.

Ironically, as Dekker challenges the court, 17-year-old Brit Michael Perham was about to complete a nine-month solo sail that will make him the youngest person to sail solo around the globe.
