Temporary longline ban could be permanent

An emergency rule enacted May 18 gives sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico more protection from a controversial commercial fishing technique. On June 8, federal fishery officials will hold a hearing in Marathon, Fla., to take comments on possibly making the rules on longlining in the Gulf permanent.
"We know longlining does do a lot of damage, not just to turtles but to other species," said Donna Cofano, president of the Florida Keys group Save-A-Turtle.
