A Marco Island sailor this winter purchased a 2005 Beneteau 423 named Tranquility but wanted to name her Made Marian, in honor of his wife, a report in the Marco Island Sun Times newspaper says. According to maritime tradition, however, renaming a boat is bad luck. So the man hired an area captain to perform an “exorcism,” the report says.
“Almighty Ruler of the Universe, whose domain covers the vast oceans of the earth, we implore you [to] expunge from your records and recollections the name Tranquility for all time,” the captain said from the dock.
Standing on the deck of the boat, the owner dropped overboard a brick with the name Tranquility written on it, and his wife broke a bottle of champagne against the forward line chock, according to the report. “I christen thee Made Marian,” the captain said.
The boat owner, who is 60, reportedly plans to get a captains license and cruise the Keys with his wife.
