Three hurricanes churning at once
There are three hurricanes being monitored by weather services this weekend: Igor, Julia and Karl.
As of 5 a.m. Eastern Time Friday, Igor had top winds of 125 mph and was centered about 760 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. The storm was still heading toward the northwest at 9 mph.
Hurricane Julia remained a Category 1 hurricane as of 5 a.m.
At that time, the storm was located about 1,450 miles southwest of the Azores and was speeding toward the west-northwest at 24 mph.
Hurricane Karl strengthened significantly and, as of 5 a.m. Friday was a major Category 3 hurricane.
At that time, Karl was located 110 miles east-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico, with top winds of 120 mph. The storm was moving toward the west at 9 mph, and additional strengthening was possible before landfall.
