Trawler cruisers and others who aspire to cruise under power have two options on the horizon to help them get up to speed.

TrawlerPort will be part of the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach Feb. 14-18.

PassageMaker magazine is staging its next Trawler Fest Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and its TrawlerPort Miami will be part of the Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami Beach Feb. 14-18. “We think of it as TrawlerPort is more an introduction to the niche, a place for newbies to learn about the lifestyle,” says Will Carlsen, advertising and events sales associate for PassageMaker. “Trawler Fest is more of an established boat show for those already taking part in the lifestyle and looking for more intense learning.”

Those who attend Trawler Fest will have access to about 60 boats and 40 booths at the Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel Marina. Trawler Fest University, which begins Jan. 29, will focus on hands-on courses taught by recognized experts. Topics typically include diesel maintenance, weather, navigation, systems overviews and on-board training. The Ultimate Trawler Fest Experience, which includes the university, costs $750.

More than a boat show, Trawler Fest also is an opportunity to socialize and network with fellow cruisers. Other events are scheduled for Anacortes, Wash. (May 14-19), and Baltimore (Sept. 24-29).

TrawlerPort is like a “little village,” says John Wooldridge, editor-in-chief of PassageMaker. “It’s not as large as our Trawler Fest events, but it’s still a show within a show.” This year, TrawlerPort will be found on ramps 3-5 within the Yacht & Brokerage Show along Collins Avenue, which runs concurrently with the Miami International Boat Show.

TrawlerPort is designed to promote the cruising lifestyle, with banners identifying participating boats of interest for show-goers to board. The event offers numerous free seminars under a designated tent, all taught by PassageMaker editors, power cruising experts and others.

TrawlerPort also is held annually at boat shows in Annapolis, Md., Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, Fla., and Seattle. For more information on the Miami TrawlerPort or to register for Trawler Fest Fort Lauderdale, visit www.passagemaker.com or call (410) 990-9086.
