The Hass’s never really cared for the cozy home with the white picket fence. Having the open ocean as their backyard was good enough for them.
Heidi and Wolfgang Hass from Berlin, Germany, completed their second circumnavigation in a powerboat Sept. 4 aboard Kanaloa, their Nordhavn 46 trawler yacht, according to The Log Newspaper. They were greeted by friends, family, and the builders of Nordhavn Yachts at their slip in Dana Point Harbor, Calif.
The couple’s first circumnavigation started in 1982 on board a 38-foot Van Dam sailboat. After selling their Berlin home, the couple island-hopped around the world during the course of 15 years. They decided to upgrade to a bigger boat, and a powerboat, in 1995 when they needed more room to continue cruising, according to the report. Since then, they have used Kanaloa to circle the world twice more.
“The boat has not given us any problem in 13 years,” says Heidi in the report. “It has been fantastic on the ocean.”
This last completed voyage began in 2003 when they acquired Zulu, their now 5-year-old terrier. They intend to stay in DanaPoint until January when they begin their next voyage to Mexico.
